Why Choose Dragon Gym?
- Diverse Martial Arts Education
Dragon Gym Martial Arts & Fitness uniquely offers expert instruction in various martial arts. Our programs do NOT consist of one instructor teaching a small variety of many different things. Rather, each Martial Art is its own program. Every Martial Art and class that we offer: Taekwondo, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Kali-Silat, Tai Chi, Yoga, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is taught by a master, or under the auspices of an expert, in that field. Of course, once you have a good foundation in one martial art, you will have the opportunity and be encouraged to cross-train. Additionally, our Russian Kettlebell classes are all taught by certified expert level instructors.
- Highly Experienced Instructors
The head instructors of every martial arts program at Dragon Gym each have decades of experience in their specialty. In addition, all of these head instructors are open minded and diversify their martial arts training. In addition to the head instructors' vast experience all instructors at the Dragon Gym go through a rigorous evaluation and certification process.

The benefits of martial arts, kettlebells and yoga for men, women, and children
Our martial arts, kettlebell and yoga programs offer a practical courses for men, women and children. Students learn how to use the inherent strengths, weapons and tools of their own bodies against the vulnerabilities of health as well as of a potential assailant. Martial arts, kettlebell and yoga training will have many other benefits as well, in addition to the feeling of enhanced security and confidence.
Complete Physical Fitness Program
Martial Arts, Kettlebell and Yoga training is a comprehensive workout using the ultimate tool, your own body! Training involves every aspect of athleticism: balance, coordination, strength, endurance, and flexibility. Training is both aerobic and anaerobic. Additionally, our classes are progressive; as students advance, the workouts become more complex, strenuous, and demanding.
Promotes Mental Awareness
An essential part of martial arts and self-defense is awareness of your surroundings and identifying potentially bad scenarios. Our students learn how to recognize the signals of potential danger, and learn the appropriate response.
Develops Self-Discipline
Self-discipline isn't just for kids. Our training systems allow adult students to set short-term goals and then strive to meet those goals. Working toward goals in a martial arts setting carries over into other areas of life: college, continuing education, family, hobbies, and careers.
Increases Self-Confidence
According to a study published in Psychology Today, martial artists have less anxiety, a greater sense of responsibility, are less likely to take uninformed risks, and are more socially intelligent.
Reduces Stress
There's nothing like pounding on a bag and yelling really loud at the end of a long day at work. Martial Arts Training is a safe outlet for frustrations at work, home, or during the commute.
At the Dragon Gym we offer a variety of Martial Arts Styles:
Taekwondo/Hapkido, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Tai Chi, Kali-Silat, BJJ and MMA. All of these courses allow you to specialize, but also provide the opportunity for cross-training.
By training at Dragon Gym you will be in the best shape of your life, exude confidence, and Melt away Stress. Everyday you will feel challenged, strong, and have an unmatched energy level.

Success Stories and Reviews of the Dragon Gym
Som, Lonnie, Chris, Pat and Diana are incredible trainers/coaches. I have been in the fitness world as a trainer for 11 years now and I am surprised by how much that I have learned from the team of them together. The both of them have a keen eye for movement like eagle for its prey and can identify what needs improvement and then implement drills to make you own the movement. I have been using some of the drills that I have learned from them for myself and my clients and have seen amazing results. You cannot go wrong by training with and learning from these people. Even if you think you are beyond learning give them a shot you will be better off if you do!

A Mom's Martial Arts Journey
My journey at the Dragon Gym began as many parents’ have, with their children. My children, Peter and Ava, were attending classes and while I would watch them from the balcony. At times, I would see the adult Black Belt classes and was amazed at the energy and skill that was displayed. I never imagined that I would become a part of this group. But, I was ready for something new in my fitness regimen. I made the move from the balcony to the dojang and have been training for the past 9 years.
Through Tae Kwon Do, I have been able to achieve strength, flexibility and self-defense skills. I’ve had the privilege to train under Master Sikdar and can honestly say that I have never left a class without learning something new.
I have also enjoyed the flexibility of the schedules offered at Dragon Gym. It can be difficult to find time to train with the demands of kids, jobs, and family, but there are so many class options available. My goal is to train regularly at the noon all-belt Tae Kwon Do class, the evening Black Belt class, and the Kettlebell classes. This helps to increase your skill set and lends valuable skills, by cross-training with different groups in varied disciplines. It also allows you to build relationships with many members of the Dragon Gym community.
Some of my favorite times at Dragon Gym are have been training hard in the winter with the mirrors completely steamed up, or that first warm day in Spring when the garage doors are opened and you can train like you are outside.
I have been fortunate to train with people that are not only my classmates and partners on our Martial Arts journey, but are friends, as well. Many of us come from different backgrounds, but we are drawn together to make a strong community through our experiences at the Dragon Gym. For that, I am most grateful.

Father & Son Team
I discovered the Dragon Gym shortly after moving to the Philly area in 2003. My son was 5 and I was looking for a fun activity that he could do to meet more people in our new city. Alexander had a great time training and I enjoyed watching him learn and develop his own sense of balance and coordination, and the sense of accomplishment that comes along with it. He also really liked being with the other kids.
Each class, I would sit in the balcony and watch him, but also couldn't help sometimes watching the adult class in the back room. It was always a large group and they looked like they were really enjoying it. Plus, the intensity was remarkable. One night, after class, I asked Alexander how it went. He said, "It's great, Dad! You should try it too." Well, why not, I thought. I'm also new to Philly and looking for my own way to meet people, but also looking for new opportunities to stay active and fit.
So the next week I signed up and have been here ever since. I started training under Master Lonnie in the lunch time classes and then added evening classes too. Today, I train almost exclusively with Master Sikdar. Between the two, you can see why the Dragon Gym is so often voted #1 in Chester County.
My time at the Dragon Gym is coming up on 10 years now and I have to say that I attribute this longevity to a combination of great things. The training is marquee and I feel as fit as ever! After recently crossing the 50 threshold, it definitely keeps me feeling young! Tae Kwon Do is such a great "all-body" activity - for flexibility, agility, strength, and endurance --And this means my everyday "quality of life' is excellent. The bonus is the community and the friends I've made here over the years.
I think I've achieved a lot of personal goals here, and they've changed over the years as I progressed in my training. Initially, I didn't think about earning my Black Belt, but rather to stay active and fit and have something in common with my son. As I progressed, I could see how much I was enjoying it and eventually the goal of Black Belt became a reality. Along the way, new physical challenges were there as well - new skills to learn -- and also new friends to make.

Happy Martial Arts Family
Words cannot express how pleased my husband and I are that our sons (Nicolas, 9 and Adam, 6) are students of Dragon Gym and how impressed we are with Instructor Chris Taylor. The boys have been students of Instructor Chris since June 2012 and we have seen such a difference in the boys’ confidence level. As an early childhood educator, I truly appreciate the talent and manner in which Instructor Chris leads the class and the positive response he is able to get from the class of children of varied ages. It not just the Tae Kwon Do technique that he is able to teach so well but, it how Chris is able to infuse every lesson with teaching the children the importance of self -confidence, self-discipline and respect. Our sons have always been good boys and have done well in school. But, I believe that what they have been learning as students of Instructor Chris has taken them to the next level in self-confidence and responsibility at home and school. Nicolas and Adam are enthusiastic about going to class at Dragon Gym because Chris makes learning even difficult techniques fun. They speak about Instructor Chris with the utmost respect and admiration and that is the sign of great teacher.
Dragon Gym and the Dragon Gym staff are most impressive!
Sincerely,
Stephanie DiMichael
Proud Parent and New Student
As I sit here feeling my body ache after my first karate class in 13 years and knowing that I will be hurting tomorrow morning, I am reflecting on why I decided to study taekwondo in my late 40s. My son, Toby, has been taking classes at Dragon Gym for a little over a year. We joined your gym with specific goals in mind and, from day one, we have not been disappointed. Immediately, I knew that instructor Chris was a God-send to Toby. He runs his classes with right combination of discipline, encouragement, and confidence-building. Early on he saw potential leadership qualities in Toby and has been building on them. We are more than impressed with Dragon Gym’s youth program and, as Toby tests for his purple belt this month, know that we will continue to enjoy a long-standing relationship with it.
As his mother, I am at the Gym two to three times a week for Toby’s classes and I watch and I observe and I listen. From the front desk staff to every black belt instructor I have been impressed with the professionalism, quality of service, and commitment to members that Dragon Gym displays. Always friendly, always helpful, never dismissive – I watch these things – because customer service/commitment is SOOO important to me (and so lacking in many establishments these days). I have watched and observed and listened and have liked what I’ve seen. I want to be a part of this community. I’m no longer satisfied to simply sit in the balcony and watch classes happen around me. Your programs are inspirational and I want to join this team. Your excellence has won me over. So here I sit, knowing that tomorrow I will be walking gingerly, but looking forward to doing it again Wednesday night. 🙂
Thanks a lot!

Rizwan Khokhar:
I started at Dragon Gym in April of 2011 in the Muay Thai program. When I started I
was pretty out of shape. I was not doing any regular physical activity and weighed 268 lbs. My diet was not helping the situation as I was basically eating whatever I wanted to all the time. It was not easy, but after the first few months I could start seeing changes. I was working hard at the gym and it was paying off. As of right now, I am around 240 lbs. I feel tremendously better and am able to do things I could not do last year. I think the biggest impact Dragon Gym has had on me has been mentally. The way the Muay Thai program is taught is extremely helpful inside and outside the gym. When you think of Muay Thai, people may think that it is something like a “self-defense” class or just a workout. There are several different techniques in Thai Boxing which are not easy to learn or execute correctly. It is strange to describe it, but it is a lot easier to learn it because of the methods used for teaching it. I am not just standing in front of a heavy bag and kicking it over and over. The movements are all broken down and gone over.
Once I actually started getting it, my confidence went through the roof. I now have the ability, mentally, to overcome any challenge. Whether it is in the gym and learning something new or at work and being faced with obstacles, I am able to say I can do it! I think Dragon Gym is the best place for any individual to go and achieve personal goals. A person could come in and start Muay Thai, or any of the other teachings at any point and go to any other gym. There is one aspect which I do not think can be found at too many places. Dragon Gym is a family!
When I initially started, I did not know any of the people I was training with. However, I was welcomed with open arms. There was no judgment being passed. If I was doing something wrong, somebody was always there to help out. There was no selfishness or people saying “I am better than you”. All this led to an amazing journey which is still being continued. This program has changed my life completely and I can honestly say I would not have been able to make these changes without the support of Dragon Gym and Coach Lonnie Beck. You gain much more than training partners her, you gain and family members!
Alex Muller:
I have been a member of Dragon Gym Muay Thai for almost 2 years. I learned about the Muay Thai program from a neighbor who was taking kettle bell classes there. He told me they taught Muay Thai. I knew about Muay Thai but had never studied the discipline before. I had no experience with striking but was excited to get started. I scheduled my quick start program the next day! My first lesson was with Coach Lonnie. I was immediately hooked. The great thing about the quick start program is your given the basic background on the types of strikes you’ll be using in a very small group setting, for mine it was me and one other student. You get the attention and instruction you need to establish a base for what you will learn next.
I was interested in the Muay Thai for a few reasons, the first is for self-defense. I am a police officer and while I grew up competing in wrestling and Judo I have never done any type of striking. I wanted to learn how to fight standing up, I have knowledge and experience for what can happen if a fight goes to the ground. My main concern was defending against punches. I figured Muay Thai would be great because while I am learning to attack with punches, kicks, elbows and knees I would also be learning how to defend against them.
I also learned proper footwork which has always been a week spot for me in all sports. I learned that footwork above all can help you win or lose a fight. I also loved the sparring aspect because it’s one thing to hit a stationary bag that doesn’t hit you back, but when you are sparring another person that is throwing punches, kicks and knees to all parts of your body you discover a lot about yourself. I am now confident that if I get into a fight I will at the very least be able to defend myself.
I also wanted to get involved for health reasons. I can easily say that I have one of the worst work schedules around and I find it hard to juggle work, family and the gym. Luckily for me classes are held 6 days a week so I can always squeeze in one or two classes. I started the program at 240 pounds, the classes along with a diet change have helped me lose 20 pounds and keep it off. I am in better shape and I have more energy. The greatest part about it is how much fun I have. The cardio and other exercises are worked into the classes in way that you sometimes don’t even know you are working out.
The instructors and coaches are all really great. Each one brings their own little tricks and techniques that they offer to you as another thing to add to your tool box. It is great to have a few of the instructors that have fight experience teaching because they have used these techniques in live scenarios and can teach from a position of experience. I like hearing “When I got in that position this is how I got out of it.” Or “I was fighting this guy who pulled this technique on me and I never saw it coming.” It all helps when you are sparring or imagining yourself in a scenario and how you can adapt and overcome your opponent.
The last thing about Dragon Gym I like is also the most important part. There is a real sense of family. The instructors actually know all the students names and will make themselves available after class to help you correct your form or demonstrate how to properly wrap your hands. Also it goes beyond the gym, last August I was at class when I was informed that my son had fallen and was being rushed to the E.R. Coach Lonnie called me the next day to see how my son was. That means a lot to me and shows me that Dragon Gym isn’t just a place that cares about you for the time that you are there, but also cares about you for the time you are not there. I could go on about what I like about Dragon Gym but why ruin it, come see for yourself.
Dragon Gym Muay Thai Kickboxing Testimonial – Kate Klinkert Exton, PA:
My training at Dragon Gym has significantly improved multiple areas of my life. The focus and discipline that we are taught in class transcend beyond Muay Thai and have made me more regimented and efficient in both my academic and work life. We are taught that pushing ourselves just a little bit further each class is what will lead us to our ultimate success. After training at Dragon Gym for almost a year now, I find that I am going that extra mile not only in gym, but in other areas of my life as well.
The confidence I have gained from Muay Thai gives me a sense of security and independence that I wish all young women had the opportunity to experience. Muay Thai is extremely applicable to real life situations and provides tools to defend oneself against a potentially larger and stronger opponent.
I have trained in other disciplines prior; however, my experience at Dragon Gym has been unparalleled. The vast amount of knowledge shared between each of my teachers and coaches keeps me coming back and always keeps class interesting. Additionally, the friends I have made in class have become like a second family to me. The positive atmosphere of the gym provides a healthy release for when the stress of school and work feel like too much. I would encourage anyone who is curious about the gym to just stop in and see it for themselves. That’s exactly what I did close to a year ago and and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Rebekah Ulmer and Family:
I was pregnant with twins in the fall of 2007. My eldest son, Jake, was a shy, very tall almost four year old.We had tried team sports, gym sessions and music classes. Jake had enjoyed the mall but didn’t seem to connect. Persevering to find his “thing” before his days were taken over by a baby brother and sister, we came across Dragon Gym. Quick Start trial and a uniform? Perfect for this shy guy!
During our first months of classes Iwas impressed by Jake’s interest in learning his palm strikes and front kicks. He was focused and motivated at such a young age and really engaged. That, ofcourse, is due to the natural talents of one Instructor Lonnie Beck. As aprevious school teacher and now parent, I can see when someone has “it”. I justknow when someone says just the right things to motivate without intimidationand makes behavior management seem like a party game. Jake was hooked. Lonniewas bringing out the best in my four year old little guy.
In November of that year Jackson andJolie arrived. So here we were lugging car seats in and out of Dragon Gym eachweek. I think I might have taken over the lobby for a few years with bottlesand diapers then toys and toddlers! Jake thrived having this special place tocall his own and developed a wonderful relationship with Instructor Lonnie.
There came a time when Jake wasbullied at school. We had the support of the school, but it was the support ofDragon Gym that made the difference. Jake had practiced self defense, yet thatwas not the most important tool in his arsenal against the persistent bully. Itwas the self control Jake had learned. He was able to talk with Lonnie as another person in his corner and Lonnie told him the story of when he was once bullied as a kid, too. These are the invaluable moments from Dragon Gym. Jake was moved to stand up to the bully and speak up for himself, and that he did.
But the pinnacle experience at Dragon Gym was without doubt the PeeWee black belt ceremony for Jake last year.To see the instructors quietly evaluating the students, to listen to the encouraging (and humorous) words of Grand Master Goh, and to witness my son making his mark on a scroll as old as the organization was so extraordinary.Jake beamed with accomplishment and pride in Dragon Gym. It was that day when he decided he would like to be a part of Dragon Gym for a long time.
Around this time Jackson was coming to the age where he could start Pee Wee classes. He had literally been attending the gym since he was in utero and couldn’t wait to begin. Jake wouldteach him to count in Korean at the dinner table and do warm ups in the livingroom. As soon as Jackson turned four he was off! Our only hurdle? A smallenough uniform! I’m pretty sure Master Sikdar had to order the triple 0!
Right now, Jake and Jackson are on aparallel path. Jackson has earned his green belt and Jake has earned a greenstripe on his black belt. Their hope is attend the next black belt ceremonytogether as brothers.
For the last five years we haveenjoyed our classes and Dragon Gym events. Not only have the instructors becomea part of our extended family but so have the other families of Dragon Gym aswell. When I think about how Dragon Gym came to be with us as the Ulmer familyit seems like it has always been there and I hope it always will be.
10/25/2012 -- Today is a very important anniversary for me. No, I don't expect anyone else to understand, but I still felt compelled to share with my friends.
Two years ago, I walked into The-Dragon Gym for my first kettlebell lesson. I had always heard how fabulous kettlebells were for conditioning and weight loss and after being at my heaviest point at 162 lbs, 31% BMI and by "the charts" borderline obese s
-Kristin Dankanich, Kettlebell Student
I have been a member of Dragon Gym for about a year now and have had my life improve in many ways because of my decision to choose Dragon Gym as my training facility. When I first joined the gym I started in the “quick start program” this program is a smaller class where a trainer helps you and everyone who is joining the gym at the same time learn the basics of what we do, so you really do not need to be intimidated if you don’t have any experience. The trainers and the other members of the gym really welcome all new students and make sure that they feel comfortable and everyone helps each other as we learn together. After completing the quick start program it was obvious to me that Dragon Gym was what I was looking for in a Gym. One of my greatest concerns in making the commitment to joining was that I would not be able to find the time to make it to the classes when I also had school and work but Dragon Gym offers so many classes a week and even on the weekends that anyone can really find one that works with their schedule. Every time I attend class the instructors teach the classes in a way that keeps them fun while you get an amazing work out in the process. They teach not only how to execute the proper techniques but also about the culture behind what we do. We have days that are hard work but they leave you feeling accomplished and it is a great way to relieve some stress from school and work. The instructors really do everything that can to help you achieve whatever your goals may be. I look forward to training everyday that I can because it’s a life change. You’re not just paying for a class you really are investing and contributing to your health and happiness.
Thank you Dragon Gym,
-Sam Dawson
Dear Master Sikdar,
Thumbs-up on Dragon Gym’s Dads’ Program! For years, I sat in the balcony watching my son train in the children’s classes. Eventually, I began wondering, “What would happen if I trained, too?” I knew it would be challenging, but something inside said, “You can do this.” With my son persistently asking when I might join, I soon ran out of excuses.
Today, I am thankful for the decision I made two years ago to join the Dads’ Program! The time has passed quickly and I am feeling strong and fit again at 58! My weight is going down and muscle mass numbers are up, significantly. Most importantly, my blood work-up numbers have improved, tremendously!
I highly recommend the Dads’ Program to anyone who desires to get fit, at any age, while studying the martial arts. The instructors are top notch, professional and well-qualified. The experience has been challenging, positive and overall, a whole lot of fun!
Thank you, Dragon Gym!
Craig Wiggins
Thank you. The words hardly seam adequate enough to express my gratitude to The Dragon Gym for the outstanding learning experience they have provided for my son. Their expertise, commitment, focus, and passion for the martial arts and their students have made them an outstanding positive example. I am very pleased with the powerful experience my son has gained as a student.
I enjoy watching the instructors lead their classes with a positive and disciplined attitude. By regularly verbalizing how well the students are doing they are able to build the confidence and self-esteem each student. This enables their students to focus, understand and learn quickly. They genuinely care about each student and strive to help them be their best. The Dragon Gym has earned my respect and admiration as a great role model.
Since my son started the Tae Kwon Do program at the Gym, he has developed a wealth of positive attributes that directly affect his daily life. I am very proud of my son for the way he now presents himself. I truly believe Tae Kwon Do has made my son a better person. He has learned to stay focused more at home and also in the classroom; he has more self-confidence in himself with routine tasks and obstacles that may come his way; and he has become more respectful of himself and others.
If you are looking for a Tae Kwon Do facility that strives to do their best at teaching their students exceptional skills and a positive attitude, than look no further.

Hi Master Sikdar,
I just wanted to compliment Dragon Gym and your instructors. My daughter is in the pee wee class and tested for her orange belt yesterday. You all did such a beautiful job. The instructors of her class are absolutely wonderful. They are always so patient, yet firm with the children. I have been very pleased with the work they are doing with my daughter.
Thank you for all of your hard work.
Sincerely,
Jane R. - Coatesville, PA
Being the Best You Can Be
I have been very fortunate to be able to train under Somnath Sikdar's tutelage for the last three years in Tae Kwon Do and Kettlebells. I have been "working out" pretty much my whole life (of 59 years). Most of my training had been on my own, learning on my own. Somnath has provided me with a much better understanding of the complex issues related to really training well and getting the best out of yourself. He is patient, clear, and concise when teaching Martial Arts and Kettlebells. His knowledge is encyclopedic. Somnath has the great gift of inspiring one to push one's envelope and go far beyond your comfort zone, to be better than your best! This type of training is where giant strides in physical, mental, and spiritual fitness are achieved.
Kettlebell Training was instituted almost immediately as an integral part of my Tae Kwon Do training when I started training. I have experienced increases in strength and cardiovascular fitness that allow me to perform very well in Tae Kwon Do. I will be testing for my first degree Black Belt soon and have the confidence that I will meet the rigorous demands of this pursuit. I feel so good about what I've accomplished. I could not have gotten to the level that I am at without the help that Somnath has given me so that I could remain fit, focused, and motivated.
I've told Somnath that I plan to continue training into my 70's. I believe that the combination of Somnath's guidance, Kettlebells, and Tae Kwon Do will get me there.

...I have been training at DG Exton for 8 years. My personal feelings are known. What I saw this weekend and experienced is a testament to the fact that the Dragon Gym Exton is a family. This event shows the spirit we have as a resource in the community and NOT as just another “membership” driven “mill” type dojang. We are personal about what we do! We are committed to how we learn and how we share our knowledge. We are sincere about our art and how we pass it down. This is most pleasing to me and frankly through my personal struggle with my own health, it’s what keeps me coming back week after week.
My warmest heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for being what and who you are:
Friends
Educators
Training partners
Confidants
Mentors
Masters
And most importantly……………Family

I trained at Dragon Gym for 8 years before moving far enough away that I could not make classes regularly. That was 2 years ago and I still cannot find a martial arts school, ESPECIALLY a TKD and BJJ focused school that even compares to the training and discipline that I received at Dragon Gym. Master Sikdar is an incredible and dedicated Martial Artist and has a way of making you want to test your limits. The children at the school just adore Lonnie and Chris, they really have a way with kids. I would recommend this school to anyone looking for a true martial arts experience. Even if you're not sure that martial art is for you, it can't hurt to try, and this is the school to get great training and a good idea if martial art is for you.
Master Sikdar is truly a master of his craft and technique. His ability to translate the art of TKD and Kettlebells is tremendous. He is very passionate about what he does and wants his students to be the same. If you choose Master Sikdar as your trainer you will not be sorry.
If you need martial arts training that will stick with you forever, you need to train at Dragon Gym. Head Instructor Somnath Sikdar is very sincere and knowledgeable not only in the art but also the science behind it. He brings a unique ability to break down the ancient martial art techniques into today's physio-medical science. The same philosophy is taught by other instructors as well at Dragon Gym. This way, you get to learn how each technique benefits you while you are training and in your everyday life. The end result is that you become a well-informed student of martial arts. I would highly recommend training at Dragon Gym if you get a chance.
It is a complete pleasure and honor to train the art of TKD under Master Som. He is the most dedicated individual I have ever met. Master Som provides us with the foundation to succeed and be the best martial artist we can be. I am proud to call Dragon Gym my home.
I was very pleased to work with Som on my Team at the 2011 Philadelphia RKC. He is a supportive, attentive teacher, very strong but carries himself humbly. Anyone who gets the chance to work with Som should jump at the opportunity.
Master Som is a great instructor. He is very detail oriented and is always pushing his students to their limits and then some. He is also very concerned for our safety and reminds us of what we need to do as students to be ready for our training during the extreme heat of summer. I could not ask for a better person to learn TKD from.
Not only does he care about our martial arts life but he is always asking how we are doing in general. I recently injured my back and shoulder and he was a great person to lean on for advice on how to stretch it out so that I could continue training. Thanks Som for being the person you are.
I've been training in Tae Kwon Do for four years. Almost immediately kettlebell training was incorporated into our Tae Kwon Do curriculum by Somnath Sikdar. Over the years as Master Sikdar instructed us in proper kettlebell training my ability to perform in the rigors of Tae Kwon Do has advanced. Having the physical strength to perform the techniques required in advancement of my training is critical to success.
Master Sikdar has a well structured understanding in the theory of training and is able to translate the complex evolutions of kettlebell techniques in simple terms that allows all of his students to safely perform. As I train under Master Sikdar I find my strength increasing to higher and higher levels. As an example when I started I felt that a 16 Kg kettlebell was too much for me to handle. Now I am throwing around 28 Kg bells and feel that I should probably be using the next higher bell at least.
I'm really a stronger student thanks to Somnath Sikdar and Kettlebells
I've wrestled, done weight lifting, and study martial arts for over 15 years, and I've never had such complete and through instruction from a school, program, or instructor. Master Sikdar is truly a one of a kind and I recommend him enthusiasticly. If you are thinking about weight training, conditioning, or martial arts, then look no further than the best I've ever worked with in Pennsylvania.
Since I have start these classes with Master Somnath Sikdar I as a person has remembered that I can do anything that I want to if I put my mind to it. I really only started to get into losing weight after my kids to get my confidense back from everything. In the end I am not only getting my confidents about my self but I am getting it about everything that I do. I have not yet met my goal weight but I am on my way to it and it is all to the fact of coming to dragon gym. The way Master Sikdar teaches is good because he breaks it down as much as possible for you to understand it. Even if you don't understand it just ask then he will explain it as much as possible. This was a great choice to come and I am glad that I have done.
Master Sikdar's ability to translate the kettlebell techniques to powerful martial arts movements has greatly improved both my health and my training. He interweaves simple and complex kettlebell exercises into traditional Tae Kwon Do kicks and punches to make a more powerful and confident student.
Having no kettlebell instruction in the past, I was highly impressed by Master Sikdar's training method, helping me to quickly master the basic techniques. This did not go unnoticed by the kettlebell instructor at my work gym, who called me out in one of his classes. Most importantly, Master Sikdar leads by example. He can outlift all of us, never to show off, but instead to inspire.
I've participated in sports, conditioning, weights, etc for the majority of my life and I can't remember feeling as good as I do now.
Som is a master at knowing when and how to push someone to find their limits and then help go one step beyond. He has the best technical knowledge that I've ever come across, which is coupled with a vast understanding of how the body works and reacts to different types of physical conditioning.
If you want to get into shape, be motivated doing it and feel part of a community that cares, then get your butt to the Dragon Gym and seek out Somnath Sikdar...he's simply the best!
I am extremely lucky to have Master Som as my TKD instructor. After losing 160 pounds I decided to give TKD a try. This is my first time attempting any type of martial arts and I am very pleased with the Dragon Gym. Master Som is very patient with his students and is constantly providing encouragement and praise. He takes time to explain the fundamentals so that you can understand them and perform them to the best of your ability. Under his instruction my body is doing things that I never thought possible. He truly is "The Man" and he will push you to be the best student you can be. Dragon Gym and Master Som are #1 in Chester County for a reason, THEY CARE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO!!!
I am truly grateful to have Master Som as my instructor in strength training and the martial arts. Not only is Som extremely knowledgeable and proficient in the arts, but also has the ability to articulate it in ways I can understand and learn from. Integrating the kettlebell with self defense and martial arts training has given me the most complete work out of my life. At 46 years of age and having had several shoulder surgeries, I never imagined I would ever have this opportunity or meet this challenge, with many more to come. Master Som and The Dragon Gym?s value system encourages me to be a better and more productive person on and off the mats.
As a doctor, I'm unfortunately very busy with 80 hr work weeks but my goals included buidling about 10 lbs of lean muscle mass. I've had a VERY hard time putting on weight but Som was able to tailor a workout regimen that takes no more than 30 min a day , 3-4 times a week and I've finally seen gains again after what seems like 10 yrs of plateau at the gym. Very impressed and thankful. Thanks Som!
I have only been apart of the Dragon Gym family for about 4 months now, but never have I learned more about my body, how to mold it into the best shape possible, and feel better about myself more in my life than working with Master Somnath. I have had experience with kettlebell training prior to meeting Somnath, but he has pushed me to a limit I thought I could have never reached and seen myself move more weight than I ever thought possible. With the workouts that he creates, he is always keeping me on my toes and always there to correct a movement and make sure I advance along in my training. Not only that, he has got me involved in Tae Kwon Doe and absolutely loving it. Though my schedule is quite often hectic and times are sometimes out of reach, he is always willing to take time away from class to teach me movements and techniques. Being able to train with an RKC certified instructor like Master Sikdar is something that I will always be thankful for, and never take for granted.
Master Sikdar has the patience that is so needed to train students of all age groups and physical abilities. Helping each reach their own potential at heir own pace. I have been a TKD student for almost 2 years and when I started I was out of shape and had'nt ever followed a regular excercise program. at 40 I struggle with moveing properly but because of Master Sikdar's incorperation of kettle bells as a mandantory part of our training he Has shown me how bells and TKD share movements and that by doing bells it will stregnthen the same muscle groups that are essential to perform martial arts. I have seen a vast improvement in what I can do physicaly since then.
Training with Som is the BEST, because he not only teaches you how to do something, he teaches you why you do it, which helps you do it better. He is an insightful, intelligent trainer who genuinely wants you to become your best and will help you get there. Training with Som is an awesome experience, his workouts are challenging and effective and his instruction is stellar. If you are looking for a positive change and results that last, he's the person to go to!!!
Working with Master Somnath Sikdar at Dragongym has been an absolute life changing experience. I first met Som when he began coaching my university Tae Kwon Do Team. He quickly introduced me to kettlebells and the RKC school of strength. I have worked with many different instructors and trainers in the past, yet none have inspired me or helped me reach my full potential like training with Som has. He has an incredibly deep understanding of martial arts, fitness, and self discipline, but the most important, which truly makes him one of the most outstanding professionals I have ever worked with, is his patience. Som takes the extra time, and goes out of his way to make sure you understand and that you succeed. It was by training under Som, that i was able to obtain my RKC, and without his help, I really doubt I would have ever done that. I can not recommend his services enough, if you ever have the chance to work with Master Sikdar, take it immediately!
Training with Master Somnath Sikdar has been a truly enlightening experience these past six years. He is always there for you, even when you think you can not accomplish something. He will show you another way to look at it, and it will all come together. Incorporating Kettlebells into our TKD training has helped everyone gain strength and endurance, making the cross over amazing. Anyone who trains with Som will benefit from his wisdom, and he will help them reach their full potential!
I've had the very good fortune of training under Master Somnath Sikdar for the past seven years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I had absolutely no martial arts training beforehand and personally credit him with the martial artist I am today.
I can't possibly convey here the wisdom I've gained from being his student, though I'm 20 years his senior. Through him, I've achieved goals I had never considered or thought possible. My time with Som has allowed me to carry his teachings into other parts of my life, and I'm a better person for it -- in and out of our dojang.
Som is an excellent motivator, knowing just when to push and went to back off (but only just a bit!). He practices what he teaches and is the ideal role model for any martial artist, always leading by example. His teaches with authority, reinforces with intensity, and supports with empathy.
I have had the pleasure of training under Master Somnath Sikdar for the past seven years in Tae Kwon Do and now, kettlebells. He is smart, clear and focused on results. He is patient with his students, pushing them to reach their full potential. Som's integration of kettlebells into the Tae Kwon Do program has truly improved my overall performance. He has helped me to realize a level of strength that I did not think I could achieve. I have never left one of Som's classes without learning something new and that is a mark of a truly great instructor. I am very lucky to train under Master and RKC Somnath Sikdar!
I have been working with Somnath for 3 years on both TKD and Russian Kettlebell. He is the kind of instructor with not only superior phisical skills set, but also the captivating ways of training. He keeps challenging us but never repeats same pattens. So I never felt mentally bored or tired even I am physically beaten. After 3 month, I find a improved me. And that's the whole point, right.
The first martial art I started at Dragon Gym Exton, PA was Kickboxing. While training, I would watch Master Somnath train others in TKD. I was amazed at his skill and also how much he motivates his students. So I told myself, I want to be a part of that and train under him. He is extremely intelligent and is constantly researching every aspect of multiple martial arts which are constantly changing. This also goes along with conditioning. He stays on the cutting edge of modern martial arts conditioning.
He is a Master in every aspect.
Before I trained with Som, everything I did with kettlebells just seemed a little off. After working with him before Tae Kwon Do classes I became much more aware of the different body parts used in workouts.
Som will definitely push you to do your best, but he helps you through it step by step. Be prepared to get a real workout from him and to feel amazing afterwards. He WILL push you, but because of Som I was finally able to move up a bell weight.
Som is an even better instructor if you do Tae Kwon Do, because its way of thinking transfers over so easily into kettlebells. However, anyone wanting to power through a tough workout should train with Som. He's the best!
I have been very fortunate to be able to train under Somnath Sikdars' tuteledge for the last three years in Tae Kwon Do and Kettlebells. I have been "working out" pretty much my whole life (of 59 years). Most of my training had been on my own, learning on my own. Somnath has provided me with a much better understanding of the complex issues related to really training well and getting the best out of yourself. He is patient, clear, and concise when teaching Tae Kwon Do and Kettlebells.
I believe that the combination of Somnaths' guidance, Kettlebells, and Tae Kwon Do will get me there.
I have been training with Somnath for nearly 20 years in the martial arts. Since incorporating Kettlebells into his personal workouts and class curriculum I have seen the immense improvements the RKC system has made. Not many people come close the the knowledge of strength training or dedication to it than Som. I highly recommend him to anyone who is ready to make the conscious transition to the "next level"

I train in BJJ with Chris Taylor. He and the rest of the students make it a very enjoyable place to train -- especially for me, an OG (old grappler). It is a tough workout where your physical limitations are pushed but respected. I feel very at home and safe in the classes. I feel that although I have long way to go, I have made significant improvement thanks to everyone involved. I plan to continue to train there for as long as my body will allow. This is a great place to begin your training at any age. There is no reason not too. Just get off your butt and do it! And get in the best shape of your life.

This is the BEST all round family / individuals gym. With a wide range of programs to fuel and inspire physical achievement and mental wellness. In almost 2 years time I have witnessed my own kids develop both in general attitude/out look and physically. They are leaner, healthier kids. Their achievements inspire me to get moving and make lasting changes to my physical fitness. Thanks to the Dragon Gym Team of Instructor's keep up the excellent work.

This is the best gym around you can't find a better one in the area. No other gym in the area can offer all that they have at such high quality. The teachers are great with the kids, so much passion and energy!
Meridith Bebee:
In addition to the expert martial arts training my children received at Dragon Gym I was overwhelmed with the care and concern the staff demonstrates towards all of its students and our community. Whether they're helping a child work through a personal struggle or raising money and awareness for issues around poverty, health and wellness, the instructors at Dragon Gym prove time and again how much they care!
Suraiya Amina:
Dragon gym is serving our area for than 30 years. The gym offers many programs like martial arts, Tae Kwon-do, Tai-chi, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Russian kettle ball for strength training, yoga etc. The way our nation is becoming fat we need a gym like Dragon Gym , so that everybody can fit in. My son is in the martial arts program for the last three years and recently I enrolled myself in the yoga program. We , both, are enjoying ourselves. Most of all Dragon Gym has the best instructors.

The people and philosophy of the Dragon Gym are wonderful. I have had the pleasure of watching my children become more focused, more capable athletes, and better students. Not due to pressure or competition, but because the desire to achieve their own personal best in all things is instilled and encouraged at the Dragon Gym! It’s a parent's dream come true.
James Upchurch:
My children have been going to the Dragon Gym for the last 11 years & in that time there philosophy has never changed - strong mind, strong body. They teach good honest family values. I can't say enough good things about them.
R. S. Lloyd:
I've seen first hand what this place can do to channel youthful energies in the right direction. Forget boot camp or other extreme measures. This is the route to go to foster respect toward elders, athleticism, confidence, self-discipline, and a general drive for success in life.

From Tae Kwon Do, to Kickboxing, Yoga, Kettlebell and Jiu Jitsu classes- the Dragon Gym has provided us with great techniques and experiences while at the same time stressing the importance of remembering the tradition of the ancient martial arts. Thank you, Dragon Gym family!
