SCHEDULE CHANGES.

Starting Monday August 3rd, we will be rolling out some changes to the Children's Class Schedule.  There are a couple of reasons for this, the main being to elliminate overlapping kids classes.  This will enable us to ensure that the most instructors will be available and our attention is focused on one class at a time. There will be more class times and options (including a Saturday class for BASIC, CORE, and EXTREME)

Please watch the short video below for a full explanation of the schedule changes:

TEST CHANGES - NO MORE TEST FEES

About a year ago, we moved to an online test registration system.  The goal of this system was to simplify the test form process and make things easier for us and you.  Unfortunately, the system has been glitchy in some cases.  With the further goal of simplification we are going to elliminate the test fees and incorporate that cost into your monthly payment.   Additionally, the test registration process will be much easier for you.  All you have to do is bring (have your child bring) the completed test form (paper) with them to test day.  That's it.

As you know we hold belt tests every 10 weeks.  As such there are 5 tests per year.  Typically you are spending $200-$250 (4-5 tests) per year on test fees without referral credits.

Starting in the month of August we will be adding $15 to your monthly bill in order to replace the test fees.  Your annual cost will be reduced by $20 - $70.

There will still be a fee for DAN/DEGREE tests.

If you have mupltiple children in the program, please send me an email.

This will be a cost reduction for you and a simplification for us.

If you have any questions about the above two changes, please send me an email.

Know thyself and the difference between wants, likes, and needs

facebooktwittergoogle_pluspinterestlinkedinmail

You may have heard the Aristotle saying: "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom"  This is no little thing, hard to accomplish and perhaps the endeavor of an entire lifetime.  Although we are often our own biggest critics, it seems that the occupancy of day to day life in our minds prevents us looking in as opposed to reacting to what's coming in all the time.

Introspection is hard.

A tactic to make it more doable is to make three lists.

A list of needs, a list of wants, and a list of likes.

The needs are the highest priority things in your life (aside from the food, shelter, water needed from survival).

The wants are mid-priority items.  These are things that you put an emphasis on, but would get pushed aside for the items in the need list.

The likes or low-priority items.  These are things that you want to do or get when you have time and money left over.  They get (or should get) pushed aside most of time by the items in list one and two.

This process itself is a form of introspection, but take it a step further.  Order the items in each list and take a look at them.   What do these items say about you and your relationships.

When you take a look in this way, would you (or should you) move certain items to another list?

Where has your health, income, family and friends landed on these lists?

Does it make sense to share and compare the lists with others?

Can a process like this give you some insight on what really drives and motivates you?  Can this knowledge propel you towards achieving your goals?

The important stuff comes before the cool stuff

Good morning,

west chester martial artsLast night we were working on a takedown series as well as a punch-defense series that we routinely practice in our traditional martial arts program.  The purpose of practicing these series is multifaceted: developing reliable skill, preparing for contingencies, playing your strengths and addressing your weaknesses.

During the session, I showed the students how they can vary the standard punch defense with four to six different types of takedowns.  Each different takedown had a different purpose in order to accommodate for differences in resistance, size and reaction from the opponent.

What I noticed, in almost every single student, was very interesting.   The new takedowns, the variation, the variety, was the cool new thing and every student was rushing to get to that part.

Arguably, that was the least important part of the technique.   The most important part was to not get punched in the face!  That's the part that comes first.   In our strategy of defense, we have a three-part approach, a double-redundant system really.   And, that's important when it comes to self-defense.

Without getting too technical, the strategy goes like this:

1. Hit them before they hit you

2. Get out of the way

3. Cover up or block the attack

It is a strategy and says nothing of actual techniques.  In order for our strategy to work, we need to complete step 1 AND 2 AND 3, but more importantly, we need to execute 1 THEN 2 THEN 3.   Although these three things happen perceptibly simultaneously, there is a priority and a hierarchy and that focus is mandatory to ensure effectiveness.

However, the students were glossing over steps 1, 2, & 3 in order to get to step 4 and the techniques were losing their effectiveness.

Steps 1, 2, & 3 are always the same, they are easy, they are mundane so we ignore their importance, but without them there is no foundation for step 4.

In martial arts training, there aren't really any "advanced" techniques, there are only basics.   It's like the alphabet.  There are only 26 letters, but an un-countable number of words and infinite possibilities when it comes to writing and language.

There are no advanced letters, just increased proficiency and eloquence when stringing those words together.

The same is true for martial arts.  The same is true for effectiveness.

Proficiency and eloquence comes from mastery of the basics, the foundational elements of the task at hand.

Mastery comes from purposeful practice and completion.

Finish 1, then finish 2, then finish 3.

These are the things that are easy to do...but that means they are also easy not to do.

Ensure that you have a strong foundation for success.

Then, move onto 4....that's the cool stuff.
