However you’ve noticed that karate practice is not as easy as it looks and you want to get your child to practice at home as well as in class. How do you do this without burning both you and your child out? After all you work hard all day and are probably paying good money for martial arts lessons so you naturally want your child to be successful. Here are three simple tips to get them to practice at home.

1. Create a designated area for martial arts practice

Depending on the size of your house or apartment, do your best to create an open space big enough to practice. There is absolutely no chance for success if there is no space in which to practice. The good news is that a practice area for karate does not have to be big. An area of 10ft by 10ft is plenty and you can even function with less by being creative with your practice drills.

2. Agree on a set martial arts practice time each day

In order to successfully follow through on chosen goals you need to consistently help your child schedule a time to practice or study.

If you do this then you give them every chance of success. When structuring a practice schedule for your them you should set a fixed practice time each day that does not interfere with school homework or dinner plans. Another important point to keep in mind is the length of the practice session. You can be sure of burning your child out if you make them practice for one hour each evening. I would recommend a practice session of no more than 20 minutes each day. You can do a lot in 20 minutes and with a well-structured training program, your child’s progress will be practically guaranteed.

3. Reward your child for fulfilling his or her end of the bargain

Positive praise and encouragement goes a long way to creating motivation in your child, as they really want to please you. However a few tangible rewards wouldn’t hurt either. These rewards can be as simple as being able to watch their favorite TV show, or playing their favorite video game, or being excused from house chores for the weekend if they complete a full week of self-study sessions. Or if you’re feeling really generous then a prize of a new book or toy can go a long way to motivating them even more. You know your child best and you know what motivates them most. If you can build a rewards system into their training program then the chance of long-term success will go up considerably. An Intelligent Approach to Health and Fitness

First, it's important to distinguish between "health" and "fitness" as the two are often conflated.  Do paraphrase Dan John(which I'll be doing a lot of): Fitness really just boils down to your ability to perform a specific task whereas health truly relates to the optimal function of the organs and the body as a whole.  Many in our society are chasing fitness with the hope of a side-effect of health.  Unfortunately without an intelligent and reasonable approach, the pursuit of fitness often compromises one's health.  It seems like a silly thing, but so many are doing just that.   They are pursuing someone else's definition of fitness, be it a visual description or some arbitrary performance test.

Our goal, our mission at the Dragon Gym is to help our community become as healthy as possible.  We strive to help men, women and children become better versions of themselves.   Of course, we use a variety of vehicles to reach our destination: martial arts, muay thai kickboxing, russian kettlebells, yoga or personal training.

- Reasonableness -->  We recognize that there is a time for high output; however, most of the time is not.  Our programs are not for 14 days, or 6 weeks.  We are looking to put you on the path of healthy living for a lifetime.  How old are you?  Remember, that number goes up every year 🙂

- Progression and Mastery --> It is in human nature to want to be better.  This can mean several things.  At a base level it means to want to look better and feel better.  Additionally, humans want to be on the path of mastery.  Although this is a longer road, it is more fulfilling. What is mastery?  Mastery is comprehensive skill.  We want to develop comprehensive skill of movement, of the body, of the mind and give ourselves purpose and direction in life.

Also recognize, that fitness and healthy living goes beyond the gym.

If you're like any good parent you no doubt enjoy spending time with your kids and sharing some quality activities with them. This may include kicking a soccer ball around the back yard, going to the local park for some pitching practice, or putting some cool music on in your front room and trying out your new hip-hop groove. However, how many actual opportunities are there for families to participate together in the same class doing something that is beneficial to all involved? The martial arts offer one such opportunity.

There is a phrase used in the martial arts industry and it says that, "A family that kicks together, sticks together". This saying may sound a little cheesy, but more and more families are discovering the immeasurable benefits of sharing a common bond and a common activity between parents and children. So how exactly does karate practice provide these benefits?

Taekwondo and Martial Arts are a challenging activity regardless of age. It offers a great workout, useful and practical self-defense skills, progressive content that is structured according to ability and a spiritual and philosophical side that can provide many other worthwhile benefits. Let's look at each of these things.

Great workout

Martial Arts practice is an excellent workout. Within any lesson practitioners get to use multiple muscle groups and body parts in many different waysthrough the warm-up and warm-down activities and the various technique drills and partner work drills. It also gets your heart pumping which leads to increased cardio-vascular strength.

Useful and practical self-defense skills

Self-defense is an integral part of the martial arts. Different martial arts will place a different level of emphasis on self-defense depending on the type of program they are offering but you can be sure that during your study you will learn some useful and practical skills that will be relevant to your age and ability.

Progressive content

This is a very imortant aspect of martial arts training because as you improve in ability and experience you will constantly be exposed to the next level of content. This will ensure that there is always something new to learn and always something different to practice. This progressive content is introduced systematically so as not to overwhelm beginning students and also in order to continually challenge intermediate and advanced students.

Philosophy

Martial Arts West ChesterThere is some very valuable philosophy in the martial arts that is beneficial to both children and adults and the opportunity to study this as a family can lead to some very worthwhile and interesting discussions at the dinner table.

Each of these different aspects have relevance to all ages, and consequently parents and children are finding that the martial arts offer a very enjoyable and challenging family activity to all who participate. There is nothing like having a training partner to encourage you along the way and with Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister all training together, each individual will be able to bring different views of the same activity to the overall experience, which can only lead to better communication and understanding between family members.

Like anything else doing martial arts as a family will not be without its challenges, but in general there are only good things to say about the benefits of going to your local martial arts studio and starting a journey as a family to improved health and fitness and fun times for all.
